Can Your Nose Be Your Guide?
I don’t buy fabric softener, scented candles, and I don’t accept perfume samples at the mall, because my nose starts to itch and burn, and sometimes I get a headache. My body physically reacts in a bad way to unnatural fragrances and perfumes, and lets me know that those things are bad for me.
Pick up any commercial skincare product or detergent and you’ll probably find the word ‘fragrance’ or ‘perfume’ on the back label. Companies spend millions to come up with unique scents and fragrances that will help their products stand out in the market, and leave their customers wanting more. The problem with the word ‘fragrance’ though, is that it is not regulated. Each company has a right to keep its ‘secret’ scent safe, and that word could mean anywhere from 20,000-80,000 different chemicals combined to come up with that unique scent.
If you go to the EWG website you’ll see that there has been a lot of research to find the effect of these chemicals on our bodies. Research has been done to study allergic contact dermatitis to preservatives and fragrances in cosmetics, contact allergy and allergic contact dermatitis in children, and the increased release of histamine in patients with respiratory symptoms related to perfume.
What the research has found is that these fragrances are toxicants and allergens to the human immune system, and have shown that they cause skin allergies in children, respiratory irritation in people, and that it exacerbates asthma.
They’re also bad for the environment and have high acute toxicity to aquatic life.
So here’s what I want you to do:
- Look at the back of your labels (skincare and detergents) and see if your products have the word ‘perfume’ or ‘fragrance’ on the back.
- Notice if you start to get itchy, red, or sneezy after applying these product. Does your nose start to burn ? Sniffle? Do your eyes tear up? How about your kids? Have you noticed any strange rashes lately?
- Start to become more aware of what you’re bringing into your home and using on your body. Notice what you’re doing, how you’re feeling, and if there are any changes. Research, then make informed decisions.
At Hayah Organics we want to give you the power to make informed decisions, and provide you great, clean products you can bring into your home. So for this week’s simple tip, just take notice of what’s in your products and if your body is telling you something you should be listening to.
